(free)Southern Water Services Ltd. is investigating the development of an indirect wastewater recycling
scheme at Aylesford in Kent to improve the drought tolerance of their Eastern Water Supply Area. As
part of a wider engineering and environmental appraisal, two separate water quality models (SIMCAT
and Mike 11) were developed, covering together the freshwater part of the River Medway and the
estuary. The models were calibrated against observed automatic monitoring and spot sample data
and shown to perform well. A number of preliminary scenario runs were carried out to assess the
water quality impact of the proposed wastewater discharge when applying a range of additional
tertiary treatment options, including biological aerated flooded filters/continuously operating up-flow
filters (BAFF/COUF) and reedbeds. The impact of the associated changes in Southern Water’s
abstraction licenses was also investigated.
