Abstract

Tightening permit levels on phosphorus has led to a need to gain a better understanding to the processes and mechanics of tertiary removal systems (TSR’s) in order to remain compliant now, and for future lowering of effluent discharge determinants.

United Utilities have introduced a program to start testing and implementing new monitoring tools to get a better understanding into continuous up flow sand filtrations (COUF) systems. The monitoring tools have been used to support operations and to test ways to improve the output. In the meantime various sites, facing new P consent levels, such as Grasmere WwTW and Longton WwTW, have been equipped with a permanent Sand-Cycle monitoring system of the existing COUFs. A further out roll is anticipated, supported by the obtained results and the potential for meeting more stringent effluent criteria without a need to build new infrastructure. Savings in (unexpected) costs due to
offsets in day-to-day operations and a better understanding by the operators of the COUF process are key results.

The lessons learned, both related to the impact of the process technology and the communication between operators and technology provider, are highlighted in the paper. As COUFs are applied in large numbers by the UK water utilities, these learnings are very useful for further follow-up and implementation.
