Kingsley, M. and Hogg, M., Argent Energy, UK
(free)This paper describes the processes and market development that Argent Energy have in place to transform highly degraded fats (including those from waste water treatment plants) and oils into Biodiesel. An outline of how Argent Energy makes an assessment of feedstock and the steps used in its treatment and manufacture of biodiesel are described. Argent Energy has been a leader in this utilisation and regularly receives tankers of FOG waste into its 75 000 tonne pre-treatment plant in the UK. Whilst waste water treatment FOG can be processed the levels of usable oil can vary substantially from load-to-load. Attention is drawn to improved recovery / separation and aggregation at waste water treatment works, along with development of supply chain infrastructure as key innovations to allow greater uptake of FOG for this application. An estimation of the potential amounts of FOG available in the UK which could be used in biodiesel manufacture is made along with the potential savings to green gas house emissions. Savings to landfill and replicability are discussed also. The use of a FTI 2020 EU research grant to enable and exploit FOG for biodiesel manufacture is referenced.
