Unlocking site potential and supporting sustainable development of sewerage infrastructure using odour modelling: PRESENTATION ONLY

Barry Roberts, AECOM

Increasing urbanisation is raising demand for housing, employment spaces, services and utilities.  This is leading to challenges of encroachment around odourous facilities, such as sewage treatment works.  Similarly, vital infrastructure, such as relief sewers, are necessarily required to be located in the very areas that are under pressure from an upsurge in population densification and growth.

This presentation seeks to demonstrate how odour dispersion modelling can be used as a tool to support the unlocking of development potential (and consequently, financial return) of former ‘sterilised’ land adjacent to sewage treatment works. These modelling techniques can also feed into wastewater network infrastructure feasibility studies and help to refine designs to reduce or eliminate future odour impacts from displaced air, thus enhancing development scheme acceptance and sustainability.

The presentation will demonstrate these concepts through the use of topical case studies relating to recently supported projects in the wastewater utility sector (including North Bristol Relief Sewer, Tideway Tunnel and Counters Creek Flood Alleviation Scheme). With the need for the UK sewerage system to meet increasing flow volumes from the effects of climate change and urbanisation, the application of modelling techniques as demonstrated in this presentation will become increasingly important in achieving sustainable outcomes.
