Identify potential low carbon approaches to reducing the bacterial content of wastewater discharges
Develop evidence to inform discussions with environmental regulators on the future permitting of wastewater discharges for bacterial reduction.

Phase 1 Conclusions

Currently there is no silver bullet alternative available

– Plant data provided showed an “over achievement” of dose in comparison with the permitted condition

– This data highlights the need for effective control of dose through the relationship between power; dose; log10 reduction

– Field trials should be undertaken to establish an effective low carbon approach to disinfection

– Trials should establish site-specific dose-response relationships and use data collected to establish actual disinfection requirements
