Sludge drying is a common practice at sewage treatment works to effectively re-use the solids from primary and secondary treatment processes. The odours emitted from the sludge drying process result from a range of compounds produced during anaerobic digestion of the sludge. With the pressures on land use and the encroachment of residential and industrial units closer to these emission sources, the need to meet odour limits and to comply with the Environmental Protection Act are now very important considerations in the design of sludge drying systems. This is equally true for the operation of existing processes or when installing new equipment. Effective Odour Abatement is now, therefore, a necessity and no longer a luxury.
