(free)The increase in global population has resulted in the escalating demand in food production, contributing to vast amounts of different agricultural wastes1. The accumulation and unsustainable disposal practices of the wastes pose serious environmental challenges. Furthermore, agricultural run-offs contribute greatly to surface water pollution2.
One of the group of pollutants of concern in the run-offs are the residual antibiotics. The presence and persistence of these antibiotics in environment pose significant threats to humans, such as an increase and spread of antibiotic resistance3. Therefore, meeting global food demand while protecting water quality and the environment are the key global challenges.
