THE GLOBAL WARMING POTENTIAL OF OPTIONS FOR MANAGING ORGANIC RESOURCES

Jan Gronow
Imperial College London

(free)

This paper considers some of the recent comparative studies of options for the diversion of
biodegradable waste from landfill. It suggests that there is a need to rationalize our response
to the challenge of climate change, examine where the most difference can be made and use
resources accordingly. We are carrying out sound science but are not necessarily taking note
of its outputs. It appears that the science is not actually telling us that there are huge
greenhouse gas emissions savings to be made in the management of waste, once it is
produced. The information indicates that significant life-style changes are required if we are
to achieve the energy and resource efficiency necessary to reduce our impact on the planet.

KEY WORDS
