Biosolids are a valuable source of plant nutrients (i.e. nitrogen, phosphorus sulphur, potassium, magnesium and trace elements), stable organic matter and lime. Recycling biosolids to agricultural land improves soil quality and fertility and to completes natural nutrient and carbon cycles.  The use of biosolids in agricultural systems is a necessary part of sustainable strategies for preserving the earth’s natural resources (e.g. rock phosphate) and safe-guarding future food security. It is important that the agronomic benefits gained from applying biosolids to land should be balanced with risks to soil and water quality. The Biosolids Nutrient Management Matrix was introduced in 2014 to more clearly define good practice in biosolids management. Recent changes to the guidance on typical nutrient contents of biosolids products contained in AHDB’s Nutrient Management Guide as well as the introduction of the Farming Rules for Water in England prompted a review of the guidance included in the Biosolids Nutrient Management Matrix. This paper will summarise the evidence base to support the changes in the recently revised Biosolids Nutrient Management Matrix which underpins the sustainable use of biosolids in agricultural systems.
