Biorefineries are process solutions that turn raw materials from renewable sources into valuable
products, normally different types of materials, chemicals and fuels. This paper discusses the
biorefinery concept in a biosolids context. Third generation biorefineries, which can handle mixed
inputs and produce multiple outputs and examples of such solutions are discussed. Sustainability
principles for biorefineries are discussed in terms of efficiency, nutrient cycling and ecocycle
contamination.
