The paper describes achievements in wastewater sludge treatment by United Utilities in
response to the changing business, social and environmental setting in which a water utility in
the UK must operate. In particular wastewater treatment is challenged with meeting strict
regulations as well as a host of external constraints including food producer conditions and
public perceptions. The paper sets out how the challenge and constraints have been
considered and addressed in a technical development programme aimed at providing a
sustainable strategy for wastewater sludge management.
