Tackling priority substances: a United Utilities approach

Carolyn Heath, United Utilities: PRESENTATION ONLY

(free)

Chemical Investigations Programme (CIP1)
•Under the Water Framework Directive (WFD) Water Companies will be required to meet ‘good chemical status’ for a number of substances (i.e. priority hazardous substances and UK specific pollutants)
•A study was required to assess the contribution made by wastewater discharges to the concentration of these priority substances within the environment.
•Atkins instructed by the EA initiated CIP1 in AMP5 whereby many UK water companies were obliged to investigate the source, treatment and control of priority substances.
•The data collected will be used to develop a future programme that must be implemented to meet the WFD requirements, subject to disproportionate cost and technical feasibility.
•CIP1 will be followed by CIP2 in AMP6
