The UK population is projected to increase by 3.6 million (5.5%) over the next 8 years, to 69.2 million in mid-2026 and then increase to 72.9 million in mid-2041. This will result in the need to increase treatment works capacity in areas where land is at a premium and where site footprints are tight. In addition, it is recognized that tighter environmental discharge consents will be enforced. These drivers have led to the development of processes, such as the Membrane Aerated Biofilm Reactor (MABR) technology, that can intensify treatment capacities of existing traditional technologies therefore making them more efficient in treatability and energy consumption. In order to demonstrate this proven innovative technology, SUEZ have recently completed a 12 month trial on an operational site located south-east of Reading, England to target loading rates which were required to satisfy both operational and capital requirements of clients.
