(free)Phosphorus is a key ingredient in the fertilizers used in agriculture. It is primarily produced by mining, but resources are not limitless and no synthetic substitute currently exists, while demand is growing due to the pressure of worldwide population growth.
Veolia Water Technologies has developed StruviaTM, a solution for recovery of phosphorus from municipal wastewater effluent, as struvite crystals.
The paper will describe the technology and the advantages of the solution proposed compared to the technologies already existing on the market.
The results of the trials carried out on different waste waters will be presented especially the one year trial carried out at the Brussels WwTW. The quality of the final product as a fertilizer will be described with the solution proposed by Veolia to incorporate it into a commercial organo-mineral fertilizers already used in specialized agriculture.
Finally, the results of the first full scale plant at Helsingor Southcoast WwTW in Danemark will be presented.
