Spidflow™ is Veolia’s high speed Dissolved Air Flotation (DAF) used for pretreatment of moderately loaded waters. This study aims to explore the potential of the process for new applications. A Spidflow™ unit has been implemented for treatment of 3 different wastewater types with high suspended solids concentrations, as follows: After a biological treatment system (Moving Bed Biofilm Reactor), as primary treatment and on spent biofilter washwater. The total suspended solids (TSS) in these waters is between 100 and 1000 mg/L. Results show that excellent treatment performances can be achieved at surface loading rates over 20 m/h. Effluent of stable and acceptable quality is obtained even without chemicals, a key advantage for Spidflow in wastewater applications. Sludge concentration is over 30 g/L for the post-MBBR system and over 50 g/L when the system is used for primary treatment and backwash water. This avoids the use of a thickener. The possibility to operate without chemicals and the increased velocity are significant competitive advantages for the Spidflow™ process in municipal and industrial markets.
