SLUDGE TO ENERGY AT THE RINGSEND WASTEWATER TREATMENT PLANT

The Ringsend Treatment Works, based in Dublin, Ireland, caters for a population equivalent
of c2 million people. In order to deal with increasingly high daily volumes of sewage sludge,
produced as a by-product of the wastewater treatment, Celtic Anglian Water have developed
a strategy that is to produce sludge a) of a higher quality b) in smaller quantities and c) that is
safe. An extremely valuable by-product of this sludge management strategy is energy
production and with today’s escalating energy prices, optimisation of production, and efficient
use of this fuel source is critical. This paper details the conversion of 35,000 tonnes of
sewage sludge into 11,453,800 KWh of electricity and all the challenging bits in between
