SHARON: A SIMPLE BUT HIGHLY EFFICIENT PROCESS FOR THE REMOVAL OF AMMONIA FROM RETURN LIQUORS

Gordon Thomas and HenkWim de Mooij, Grontmij

(free)

SHARON stands for Stable High rate Ammonia Removal Over Nitrite. A brief explanation of
the functioning of the process is described. The methods for obtaining efficiencies in energy
consumption and carbon source are highlighted. Although the process is stable and highly
effective its components are simple to construct and maintain.

The process was developed in Holland where nutrient removal has been widely undertaken
because of the early decision by the Dutch authorities to declare all rivers and coastal waters
to be ‘sensitive waters’. Several processes were compared and SHARON was selected as
the most efficient process on a whole life cost basis. The construction of several full size
plants then followed. The process has a number of applications such as treatment of liquors
from digestion plants, drying plants, treatment of landfill leachate and wastewater from
digestion of organic municipal solid waste or manures.

The paper gives a brief review of future developments considering in particular options to
further reduce operating costs.

Finally, there is a summary of the reference plants in, Holland which have been in operation
for several years and a résumé of projects elsewhere in Europe and North America.
