(free)Water utilities need to minimise the impact of odour from their facilities on local residents and businesses to improve customer service.
Monitoring odour emissions from wastewater treatment works and networks can provide water utilities with vital information to pro-actively manage their assets and odour abatement technologies to minimise the effects of odour. Odour monitoring options currently available can range from portable monitors used to monitor sewer air to fixed monitors installed on odour control unit (OCU) stacks and on site boundaries. Odour parameters that can be measured range from single gaseous species, such as hydrogen sulphide and ammonia, to multiple species detected by an electronic nose and dissolved sulphide in wastewater.
This presentation will cover, with examples, what, where and why monitor odour, the instrumentation currently available and the practicalities of measurements. This information will assist with selecting the most cost effective approach to monitor odour for particular situations.
