(free)Thames water generates energy from digestion of blend of primary and SAS sludges (the target for Year 5 of Amp5 is 288 GWh). The amount of energy generated depends on the primary and SAS ratio of the digester feed. Higher proportion of SAS produces low energy and it also produces wetter cake that increases the cost of sludge transportation to land. THP pre-treatment of SAS only and blending with Primary sludge and digestion in series can potentially increase the energy generated regardless of primary to SAS ratio in the blend feed and reduce the sludge to land transport cost. Digestion in series avoids sludge short circuiting and maintains the HRT that in turn maintains enhanced gas production.
In summary, SAS only pre-treatment and combined digestion in series can potentially enhance sludge digestion process and improve generation as well as potentially reduce opex cost (transportation).
