• High breeding grounds for antibiotic-resistant pathogens (de Carvalho et al., 2019).
• Bacteria are in contact with antibiotics at lower concentrations than the minimum inhibitory concentration which promotes antibiotic resistance (Gullberg et al., 2011).
• Not designed to remove pharmaceutical compounds. (Encarnação et al., 2020).
• Chlorination and UV have been investigated but are shown to be ineffective (Zhang et al., 2019; Metcalf et al., 2014).
• Adsorption processes such as activated carbon are effective but costly (de Carvalho et al., 2019).
