Abstract:

Fresh water supply is already under a lot of pressure in certain parts of the world. Water reuse schemes are being developed globally to offer an additional option to address this issue, but regulations, guidelines and permitted use vary significantly from one country to another. The objective however remains to provide sustainable protection to the environment as well as human health. This paper presents an innovative process developed by Veolia, Opaline C, combining powder activated carbon with low-pressure UF membrane in a single process step for the production of high-quality reclaimed water. The results obtained from a large pilot plant processing secondary treated effluent from 2 municipal wastewater treatment plants in France are presented in terms of micropollutants and pathogens removal, as well as general process performance.
