In recent years UK water industry carbon reduction targets have resulted in energy efficiency schemes, maximising the potential for self-generation and a move towards sourcing electricity from renewable sources through the selection of green tariffs. Consequentially carbon dioxide emissions from power consumption are being reduced and the influence of process emissions is increasing.
In trying to reach a net zero position in wastewater management we are facing a number of challenges which include how to quantify process emissions based on an incomplete picture of measured data and dealing with additional treatment process stresses caused by the impacts of climate change. With a commitment to reach net zero emissions by 2030 there is need to act quickly, but is there sufficient incentive to change behaviours and how can success be measured?
