QuantifIED through bioresources process simulation – supporting low cost, low carbon futures: PRESENTATION ONLY

Amanda Lake, Bart Kraakman and Zac Alexander, Jacobs, UK

(free)

Methane and nitrous oxide have an outsized climate impact

▪ Methane is short lived and high near-term impact − 27 xCO2 (100 years) − 80 xCO2 (20 years)

▪ Nitrous oxide lives long and is 273 xCO2(100 year GWP)

Bioresources are a key source of methane and nitrous oxide and choices  require full plant, holistic assessments

What is process simulation or modelling?

▪ Using industry standard models to simulate (steady state or dynamic) and evaluate WRRFs

▪ 25 years ago Jacobs developed Pro2D2- an ASM + ADM1 based whole plant model including THP (Wilson & Novak, 2009)

▪ We also use commercially available models

▪ Pro2D is standard for any WRRF project including resource recovery (e.g. P recovery) – rapid steady state simulation − Improved digestion relative to supermodel approaches (which don’t include ADM1). − Can feed other inhouse tool Replica PD carbon to estimate cost and

▪ We can import Pro2D -> SUMO22 and have developed our own (e.g. THP) modules in SUMO ▪ Models take effort to produce but once develop can be used to decrease operational costs, make long term planning decisions, refine decisions and develop strategic focus areas
