Hydrogen as a fuel
• Often made ‘renewably’ by electrolysis of water
• 2H2 0 -> 2H2 + O2
• Other methods: ethanol and methane reforming, fermentation
• In development: biological, photoelectrical and high temperature water splitting
• Storable (but leaky)
• Uses: power turbines, cars, aeroplanes, steel making, methanol and ammonia synthesis, refining
• Government hydrogen strategy (August 2021)
• 5GW green hydrogen by 2030
• £900 million funding before 2030 to increase H2 production
