The Mangere Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) in Auckland, New Zealand is being converted in an ambitious 2-year program into an energy neutral, Water Resource Recovery Facility (WRRF). The following six innovative technologies are considered:

  1. AAA => Carbon capture
  2. AvN => Optimal TN control
  3. inDENSE => Increased settling velocity
  4. Cambi => High rate digestion
  5. Recovery => P recovery (Struvite, Amorph CaP, Brushite)
  6. DEMON => Side-stream N removal


The project conducted using agile principles consists of the following steps:

  1. Model construction and calibration for existing facility in Sumo©, influent characterization (complete)
  2. Model based evaluation of new technologies (complete)
  3. Piloting and model finetuning (on-going for over a year)
  4. Construction (expected 2021)
