The DEMON® Process
Introduction

• DEMON is an abbreviation for deammonification
• Deammonification involves partial nitritation & anaerobic ammonia oxidation pathways to convert ammonia to nitrate and nitrogen gas
– Ammonia oxidizing bacteria (AOB) convert ammonium to nitrite
– Anammox bacteria convert the nitrite and the remaining ammonium to nitrate and nitrogen gas
