Pilot trial of Microvi MNE at Scottish Water: PRESENTATION ONLY

The presentation will focus on the results a from a 6 month trial of a Microvi MNE reactor, discussion on the technology and the broader context of this trial in Scottish Water’s strategy for accommodating growth.

Abstract

A key part of Scottish Water’s approach to growth is to investigate technologies that can intensify the typical activated sludge process, reducing the need for additional investment and carbon emission.

One such technology is Microvi MNE. This method of process intensification uses specific micro-organisms, retained within a specially engineered micro-environment (termed a biocatalyst) to enhance treatment. This biocatalyst achieves a high concentration of effective biomass that can achieve improved ammonia and soluble BOD removal even at low retention times. This technology has the potential to increase waste water throughput in existing assets to service new development without compromising performance. A pilot scale reactor was installed at Scottish Water Horizons development centre at Bo’ness.

The pilot trial successfully examined the Microvi technology for secondary waste water treatment application. From the trial, it was found that under normal operating conditions the effluent consistently meets an effluent ammonia concentration well below 1 mg/l with an HRT of around 4 hours, without generating excess solids and high levels of ammonia removal can be achieved even at an HRT of 2.3 hours.
