(free)Within the Waste water Industry there are many “myths & legends” behind the chemistry of phosphate
removal by chemical addition, many of these have lead to significant misunderstandings of what on
line analysis can be used for in the removal process.
This paper describes the current techniques for the addition of chemicals to remove phosphate from
the sewage and introduces a discussion of what phosphates are, how they are analysed and the
problems associated with the analysis. It also examines the area of how and where chemicals are
added as well as the determination of the concentration of phosphates at that point.
The paper goes into the chemistry of phosphate analysis as well as the chemistry of the removal
process.
