A joint paper was presented by Andritz and Southern Water at the 8th European Biosolids Conference in which experience
gained during the first year of the companies' 5 year Dryer Service Contract was presented. This contract is now in its fifth
year and significant lessons have been learned in the intervening period relating to the problems of maintaining high levels of
availability on these plants as they start to age and while Southern Water has continued to increase throughput. The changing
reliability of different plant items has necessitated a changing approach to the maintenance procedures used as well as the
resourcing of the contract. Data are presented to demonstrate the efficacy of these procedures in reducing the number and
duration of plant failures through preventative maintenance and rapid response to breakdowns. The paper attempts to
highlight the efficiencies which can be gained through an on-going structured relationship between end user and Original
Equipment Manufacturer.
