Nkrumah, K. and Nabeerasool, A., Kolina Ltd, UK
(free)Kolina has developed and tested their proprietary electrocoagulation (EC) treatment system on the removal of phosphorus from effluent at a working STW in England. Removal rates of up to 93% were achieved without the need for chemicals. The versatility of the technology was proven by integrating the electrocoagulation plant at three different stages in the STW treatment process; namely pre-humus tanks, pre-sand filters and post sand filters, without significant compromise to its performance.
Kolina’s fully automated EC plants require little to no operator intervention, sacrificial anodes changes take less than a minute per cell to carry out, and the plant’s remote access capabilities allow Kolina’s engineers to diagnose faults remotely. This plant is ideal for small (up to 30 m3/h throughput) and remote sites with stringent P-removal targets. EC power consumption for treatment ranged from 0.28 to 0.38 kWh/m3 treated.
Kolina’s work was extended to the removal of metals from produced waters from oil and gas applications, with removal rates of up to 75% obtained for a suite of metals including zinc, chromium, nickel, arsenic, cadmium and copper.
