Abstract
Yorkshire Water installed 22 Phosphorus (P) removal schemes, with final effluent permits between 0.5 – 5 mg/l Total Phosphorus (TP) in AMP6. 15 of these Sewage Treatment Works (STW) received permits ≤ 1 mg/l TP.
AMP 7 will see around 80 new P permits for Yorkshire Water of which at least 60 will include chemical dosing installations ranging from simple single-stage to more complex two-stage dosing with tertiary solids capture. For the majority of the AMP6 STWs, Iron (III) metal salt was selected and where alkalinity was deemed a process risk, caustic dosing added. This paper describes operational experiences and modifications; looks at data from selected sites to provide an overview of the molar ratios of chemicals used compared to design; and predicts the levels of P that can be achieved via single- and two-stage dosing.
Challenges during commissioning, optimisation opportunities and the benefit of good mixing are discussed.
