The paper provides an introduction to the thermal drying of sewage sludge in the UK and the background to the formation of the Dryer User Group.
The critical role and liaison developed between the UK Health and Safety Executive (HSE) and the Dryer User Group is explained following a number of fire/explosion incidents. This liaison role continued through the HSE’s development of the Information Document 847/9 (The Control of Health and Safety Risks at Sewage Sludge Drying Plants: July 2001) and continues to the current day.
The impact recent legislation has had on the Dryer User Group, DSEAR 2002, is explained including the influence on Information Document 847/9. The introduction of Safety Integrity Assessments to satisfy BS EN 61508 and its impact on UK thermal drying systems is reviewed.
KEY WORDS: DSEAR, Dryer User Group, HSE, Safety Integrity Level, Sewage Sludge, Thermal Drying.
