Operation of the new BIOTHELYS® Facility at Saumur, France

Veolia Water’s Thermal Hydrolysis System BIOTHELYS® is now operational at the site of Saumur, an extended aeration
biological nutrient removal facility. The paper details the impact of using the BIOTHELYS® process to hydrolyse the waste
sludge, prior to mesophilic anaerobic digestion to enhance digestion of biological sludge.
In the thermal hydrolysis stage, both live injection and flash steam recovery are employed to economically heat the
sludge to the hydrolysis temperature of 160°C for a duration of circa 30 minutes. The first results together with details
of BIOTHELYS® system are presented.

BIOTHELYS® is a batching process. Its reaction vessels are paired, recovering flash steam from the processed
effluent, which is cooled down to the adequate temperature prior to digestion.
