Kirwan, R.P. and Heavey, M., Greenstar, Ireland
(free)Greenstar is Ireland’s leading provider of integrated waste management services and
operates fourteen waste facilities in the country. Currently, in Ireland, there is a lack of
national technical guidance in relation to regulation, assessment and control of odours from
activities in the waste industry. In the absence of such guidance, Greenstar has developed its
own odour procedures based on international best practice and practical experience gained
across its facilities. This paper examines the methodologies employed by Greenstar at a
practicable level across their sites to manage and control odour.
Odour management has many facets from the use of best available techniques in the design
of facilities to the use of best practice operational controls during a facility’s active life and the
implementation of ongoing post-closure controls during the decommissioning phase of a
facility. Operational management techniques practised by Greenstar include the adoption of
standard operating procedures, efficient landfill gas management through energy utilisation
and the implementation of innovative best available technology for waste acceptance,
placement and odour management at facilities. Greenstar facilities encompass odour sources
of both “point” (i.e. waste transfer station) and “diffuse” (i.e. a landfill) types and the
experiences gained in both type of situation are discussed in this paper.
