The land application of wastewater biosolids may generate nuisance odours emissions due to
elevated biosolids emissions levels, unfavorable weather conditions, and topographic conditions.
Theses may upset communities neighboring the land application sites and these communities will
often enact legislation to ban or minimize the recycling of biosolids. This study develops an odour
dispersion model to evaluate biosolids emission impact on surrounding communities by measuring
the level and dispersal of biosolids odourant emissions. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency
(EPA) Regulatory Model, AERMOD, is utilized in this study to address the modeling of odour
dispersion of biosolids land application sites in Virginia. The Geographic Information System (GIS) is
employed to generate concentration prediction maps to show predicted odourant sensation areas.
The sensation area usually occurs during low wind speed and adverse meteorological conditions
especially in early morning and night. The sensation area, moreover, is sensitive to topographic
features particularly complex terrain. This study will help biosolids manager to evaluate neighboring
communities and to make better decision selecting land applications sites prior to distributing and
applying biosolids to nearby agricultural sites.
