Introduction

The advanced stripping technologies engineered by Byosis – ByoFlex® and ByoNix® – are specifically designed to remove ammonia from polluted streams such as (sludge) digestate, municipal wastewater, vapor condensate and industrial wastewater, using minimal heat consumption and little to no chemical agents.

Using this low energy method, 85% ammonia reduction can be achieved, alternatively removal efficiency levels of up to 99% can be achieved by managing temperature, pH and energy consumption. Through this process nitrogen is recovered as a renewable liquid fertilizer in the form of liquid ammonium sulphate, ammonium nitrate, a combination – ammonium sulphate saltpeter – or even as ammonia water, thus creating a potential revenue stream.

This paper describes the excellent results seen on a commercial scale, highlighting the reduction of carbon footprint (equivalent CO2 and nitrous oxide emission reduction) using this method – proving it to be competitive against traditional technologies for reducing ammonia loads.
