What?

The Industrial Emissions Directive (IED) is transposed into UK law through the EU Exit Regulations and sits in EPR. It commits us to control and reduce the impact of industrial emissions on the environment.

Why?

‘Sludge’ is not an Urban Wastewater and therefore the Urban Wastewater Treatment Directive exclusion within the IED does not apply to AD carried out by the Water Industry

Where?

S5.4 activity WwTW/STCs have AD facilities and a throughput of 100m3 /day or more of sludge. Includes DAAs, MCPs

When?

BAT compliance deadline was August 2022 – generally pushed to Dec 2024

How?

Obtaining an Environmental Permit – new bespoke waste/ Installation Permits or variations of existing permits. Superseding separate permits – MCPD, EPR, T21 exemptions BAT/Appropriate measures/CIRIA 736
