N2O InSites – a collaborative approach to measurement (and mitigation) of N2O: PAPER & PRESENTATION

Why N2O InSites?

  • We know N2O is highly dynamic, varies across and within lanes, seasons
  • Long term measurement is best to capture seasons − Continuous and/or − Targeted campaigns and spatial variation − we want to optimise
  • But any data is better than no data and we need to prioritise − we lack high quality data and meta-data − we lack reliable surrounding process data – DO, nitrogen species, carbon
  • Collaborative opportunity to install instrumentation, get reliable first hand data and to collaborate

Pilot trial – Countess Wear, South West Water

  • PE 165,150: 15BOD:20TSS:10NH4
  • Carbonaceous ASP – suspected partial nitrification
  • Fixed film nitrifying BAFF
  • Anecdotal evidence of poor flow split across 4 lanes
  • 3 phases of work monitoring N2O
    − Phase 1 – Lane 1
    − Phase 2 – Lanes 3, 4
    − Phase 3 – BAFF − Phase 4 – Lanes 2,3
