Conclusions of Research
- Nutrients increase in the biosolids matrix increases E. coli growth
- Oxygen availability and moisture content within the ranges tested are not the dominant factors affecting E. coli die-off rates in stored biosolids
- E. coli die-off in biosolids is significantly increased at storage temperatures greater than 25°C
- Insulated covered storage can maintain temperature ≥25°C over the summer months. Alternative storage environments and heat recovery on site could maintain benefit over winter months
