The Membrane Aerated Biofilm Reactor (MABR) technology consists in an attached-growth process in which a gas-permeable membrane is used to transfer oxygen to a biofilm naturally growing on the membrane. Substrates like ammonia and biodegradable COD diffuse from the bulk to the biofilm, where the oxidation-reduction processes occur.

The unique characteristics of the counter-diffusional bioprocess taking place in a MABR result in an overall improved stability of the process: by delivering oxygen to the inner layers of the biofilm the stability and robustness of the bioprocess increase significantly, thus leading to a more resilient and flexible performance compared to both conventional co-diffusional attached-growth and activated sludge processes.

The present work is aimed to present and discuss results from full scale installations of the ZeeLung MABR technology by Suez WTS, with a special focus on KPIs (Key Performance Indicators), such as oxygen transfer rate (OTR) and oxygen transfer efficiency (OTE). A number of sites where full-scale cassettes are installed and operated will be presented, including the largest MABR system in the word which was designed to face an organic loading capacity increase and fulfil new P limitations and is now up and running since more than two years.
