The issue of sewage sludge and biowaste management in the Czech Republic is subject of considerable attention. Nevertheless, the legislation on biowaste in the Czech Republic is insufficient. Appropriate rules for composts, produced from biowaste are not available in the Czech Republic. Greater part of composts is aimed to land reclamation or fertilization of non-food crops, where also composts produced from biowaste, which do not meet these strict requirements could be applied. The current valid standard for industrial compost in the Czech Republic is already out of date. It does not set the limits for example for organic pollutants, and neither hygienic risk. The issue of biodegradable wastes has been studied in the T. G. Masaryk Water Research Institute – Centre for Waste Management in Prague. During this year, new regulation for treatment of biowastes has been prepared, which contains both minimal requirements for technologies and qualitative requirements on the treated wastes. This regulation will also address the biological treatment of catering waste. The prepared Regulation proposes categorization of the composts according to their quality into three classes, including definition of the spheres of their application.
