Trickling filters remain as a mainstay for UK wastewater
treatment, especially in rural areas. There are an estimated 7,000 sites in the UK
 Many smaller sites are being served with more stringent consents
 The overall performance of the trickling filter plant is reliant on the humus tanks’ ability to remove suspended solids effectively.
 In a regulatory framework dominated by performance at the 95th %ile understanding variability is the key to risk management.

The previous study developed the ‘Tonbridge model’ to explain the wide seasonal variations in effluent TSS in terms of temperature. This model is a commination of the effect of 2 elements
◦ Seasonal solids production from the trickling filter
◦ Effluent temperature related viscosity reducing the settling velocity of fine particles in the winter and increasing it in summer
