Integration of Thermal Hydrolysis into sludge treatment at Cottonvalley WwTW, Milton Keynes

The paper is a case study of the construction, commissioning and operation of a new 21,000 tonnes dry
solids per annum sludge treatment centre at Anglian Water’s wastewater treatment works at Cottonvalley, Milton Keynes. The construction of the new sludge treatment centre was completed in summer 2008 and is part of Anglian Water’s £95 million AMP5 biosolids programme to provide treatment capacity for approximately 100,000 tonnes dry solids per annum to achieve an enhanced treated standard. The Cottonvalley project was delivered by the Black & Veatch as the design and build contractor and supported by Mott MacDonald as the civil engineering designer.

The new plant was constructed on a the site of the existing sludge treatment centre which uses
conventional anaerobic digestion followed by 21 day liquid storage and dewatering. The existing
treatment centre was capable of treating approximately 12,000 tonnes dry solids per annum. The project
installed a CAMBI Thermal Hydrolysis process upstream of two existing 3750m3 anaerobic digesters
increasing the treatment capacity up to 21,000 tonnes dry solids per annum.

The new plant comprises of sludge screening and thickening, thermal hydrolysis, digestion and
dewatering. The plant is heated using steam that is provided by a 1.4 tonne waste heat recovery boiler
connected to a new 1.75MWe CHP engine and a 6 tonne supplementary dual fuel steam boiler.
