(free)Industries with high organic waste and sludge generation face significant challenges in wastewater treatment processes specifically in the disposal of primary and secondary sludges arising from their processes. The paper will describe several thermophilic biological systems, their application and advantages for different industrial sectors. Thermophilic aerobic treatment systems offer unique advantages for treatment of high strength organic waste streams and slurries/sludges by reducing residuals processing and disposal costs. These systems also open opportunities for materials and energy recovery. Included in the paper is a discussion of different industrial case histories that are examples of the various implementation strategies to achieve sludge reduction. KEY WORDS Aerobic liquid waste treatment, high-strength organic waste, industrial waste, sludges, thermophilic process
