Celtic Anglian Water is the leading water and wastewater services provider in Ireland. The
company operates a number of wastewater treatment works (WwTWs); water treatment works
(WTWs) and a metering business in the Republic of Ireland. Dublin’s WwTW, with a population
equivalent (PE) of 1.7 million, is its biggest contract.
Celtic Anglian Water aims to be the leading environmentally sustainable water and wastewater
services provider in Ireland. To achieve such an ambitious goal, targets have been set up to
reduce usage of all resources and improve carbon footprint. It was decided that the main tool
driving the effort to reach the targets will be implementation of I.S. EN 16001 and its full
integration into the existing Integrated Management System.
The main requirements on the system development were to ensure continuous progress,
simplicity, user friendliness and the involvement of all staff. The system has been designed to
map and analyse all the energy aspects and their energy usage, identify and promote
implementation of all opportunities leading to energy savings as well as to communicate
identified Energy Performance Indicators (EPIs) to the whole team.
In the early stages attention was paid to implementing the EPIs, their targets and their
benchmarking against other water and wastewater services providers. The energy management
development and its implementation have already delivered results. The energy usage is
mapped, EPIs and their ownership setup. A number of identified opportunities for energy saving
have been implemented.
