(free)To comply with the IED Emissions to Air and Appropriate Measures, the legislation directs WaSCs towards recovery or abatement of emissions from post digestion processes. Uncertainty over the quantities and suitable routes for dealing with the emissions is posing uncertainty and challenges to the industry in the development of their case with the regulator.
We have explored possible approaches and the options available to mitigate against emissions to air that could form part of a responsible and efficient use of capital. We considered the benefits of mitigation in terms of revenue and carbon (methane and carbon equivalents). We also explored a holistic approach to the operation of Bioresources assets including how optimisation of assets can influence downstream emissions and how unintended consequences such as to DSEAR zonings can be addressed.
Our work compliments research recently undertaken by others in terms of quantifying residual biogas potential (RBP), looking at a wider portfolio of mitigation options.
