(free)Abstract
The HpH process (Heating, pasteurisation & hydrolysis) was developed, trialled, and up-scaled to full
operational capacity by Anglian Water. The three- stage system pre-heats the blended feed sludge’s
prior to pasteurisation, pasteurises the sludge and achieves an ‘enhanced’ sludge product and rapid
pathogen kill and pre-conditions (hydrolyses) the digester feedstock for optimum biogas production.
The paper will follow on from those previously presented at the 16th and 19th European Biosolids and
Organic Resources conference, outlining the performance and lessons learnt from operating the
innovative HpH process at four sites since the first site was commissioned in 2013.
Key areas of biogas generation/energy recovery, pathogen reduction, operation and maintenance and
utilisation will be included together with a brief overview of areas of current and future development.
