(free)In order to comply with the requirements of the Urban Wastewater Treatment Directive,
Northumbrian Water Limited embarked on a number of schemes along the North
Northumberland coastline to provide sewage treatment in catchments with up to 8,000
population. This paper deals with the scheme put in place to meet the requirements of UWWTD
for the catchments of Seahouses, Bamburgh and Beadnell, all of which are situated in the
heritage coastline and Area of Outstanding Natural beauty. At an early stage, it was identified
that to avoid outfall extension works at Bamburgh and Beadnell, one single works, at
Seahouses, should be constructed to deal with all three catchments. The scheme also included
a number of pumping stations and transfer mains constructed to transfer all flows to Seahouses.
The paper covers the technical and environmental aspects of the scheme including the
following:-
• seasonal flow and load variations and their impact on the STW
• pumping and storage regimes for the outlying pumping stations
• the planning process which was undertaken including Environmental Impact Assessment
• site selection
• planning constraints put in place during construction to minimise disruption to tourism in the area during the summer construction period and to ensure the finished appearance of the works fitted with the existing landscape.
• construction issues and sequencing
• works performance post commissioning
