From AMP6 many treatment works have to meet more stringent total phosphorus (TP) consent limits of below 0.5 mg/l as required by the Water Framework Directive (WFD). In response to this challenge, UK water companies are collaborating in a National Chemical Investigation Programme (CIP) to test a wide range of conventional and innovative technologies targeting TP consents of 0.1 mg/L. Bluewater Bio’s FilterClear technology has been trialled at full scale by Yorkshire Water at Bolsover STW, a trickling filter site treating over 10,000 PE.
During the 10-month trial period, it was demonstrated that FilterClear technology, with the correct design loading, was able to meet this challenging TP consent. The trial also highlighted a number of lessons to be learnt, including regular evaluation of ferric dose requirements through jar tests, backwash monitoring and control, solids generation from ferric dosing, operational and maintenance checks required to maintain reliability, and the pros and cons of on line quality instrumentation. A selection of performance data, energy consumption and operational experiences are discussed in this paper.
