This paper describes both full-scale and laboratory work on the lysis of sludges to improve the performance of anaerobic digesters. It explains what the technique seeks to do and uses various examples to demonstrate mechanisms involved. The modification of centrifuges is described in order to achieve the lysis process. The paper then goes on to evaluate the benefits of the process. Costs are also discussed.
